Prabowo calls on BRICS to boost industrialization, global supply chain

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto called for stronger BRICS cooperation in industrialization and global supply chains to address challenges and promote sustainable economic growth in developing countries.

"Allow me to propose something concrete. Let us jointly pursue industrialization and optimize our resources and capacities," he said during his address at the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi, India, on Sunday.

Prabowo noted that global challenges such as climate change and natural disasters must be handled together by BRICS nations and the Global South.

As an archipelagic nation situated along the Pacific Ring of Fire, Prabowo outlined Indonesia's various vulnerabilities, such as rising sea levels, extreme weather, and volcanic activity.

At the same time, Indonesia’s natural resources also offer significant development potential, ranging from critical minerals and rare earth metals to renewable energy sources for clean technology and forests that sustain global ecosystems.

"We must acknowledge the link between climate resilience and national development," he reminded.

He then emphasized that Indonesia is not alone in confronting these challenges, as BRICS members and many countries across the Global South are grappling with interconnected issues.

Therefore, Prabowo urged BRICS nations to collaborate on their respective resources, production capacities, technological capabilities, and markets to collectively address these challenges.

He added that the economic strength and resources of BRICS nations could be leveraged to boost investment, strengthen industries, create more jobs, and open up better opportunities for their populations.

According to him, BRICS is equipped with resources and economic strengths that could strengthen the bloc’s position in global value chains.

"BRICS essentially already has a supply chain in place. Our task is to connect and optimize to utilize our strengths for greater value," Prabowo remarked.

The 18th BRICS Summit highlighted four key pillars, namely resilience, innovation, cooperation, and sustainability, in addressing various global challenges, including rising geopolitical tensions.

On the same occasion, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi pointed to the pandemic, climate disasters, and supply chain disruptions as crises that highlight global interconnectedness and transcend national borders.

Meanwhile, Chinese President Xi Jinping urged BRICS to help safeguard the stability of global industrial and supply chains amid shipping disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz stemming from the US-Iran conflict.
