Orlando Pirates face fixture nightmare as MTN8 and CAF Champions League loom

Translate

Orlando Pirates are facing a congested fixture schedule in the coming weeks as they prepare to compete on multiple fronts, starting with this weekend’s MTN8 semi-final clash against Sekhukhune United.

The Buccaneers travel to the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday for the first leg of their MTN8 semi-final, before hosting Sekhukhune in the return fixture at the Orlando Amstel Arena.

Pirates will enter the two-legged tie as favourites to reach yet another MTN8 final as they continue their pursuit of a record 15th title in the competition.

The Buccaneers have also made an impressive start to their Betway Premiership campaign. They have collected two wins and a draw from their opening three league matches, leaving them at the top of the table.

However, their position could change in the coming weeks as their attention turns to continental football.

Following their MTN8 commitments, Orlando Pirates will begin their 2026/27 CAF Champions League campaign against La Cure Waves in the first preliminary round. The two-legged tie is scheduled to take place on September 5 and September 12, 2026.

Their involvement in the Champions League could result in several league fixtures being postponed or rescheduled in September, adding to an already demanding schedule.

With the MTN8, Betway Premiership and CAF Champions League all on the agenda, Abdeslam Ouaddou will need to carefully manage his squad.

Fortunately for the Buccaneers, their extensive recruitment during the transfer window has significantly strengthened their depth. Pirates have assembled a squad capable of competing across multiple competitions, but the coming weeks will provide the biggest test yet of their squad and Ouaddou’s rotation strategy.

With silverware, league success and continental qualification all at stake, Orlando Pirates are entering a crucial period that could define the early stages of their season.
