A new 'Les Mis': This week in French film

Translate

This week on arts24, film critic Manon Kerjean takes us through some of the latest French cinema releases, starting with a new adaptation of Victor Hugo's "Les Misérables". Vincent Lindon plays Jean Valjean, opposite Tahar Rahim as Inspector Javert in a three-hour epic that brings a thriller-like tension to the classic story.

We then turn to "A Girl's Story", Judith Godrèche's adaptation of Annie Ernaux’s autobiographical novel about a young woman’s traumatic sexual experience in 1958. The film, starring Godrèche’s daughter Tess Barthélemy, was presented at Cannes this year.

Next comes "All About Corinne", Marc Fitoussi's playful comedy starring Isabelle Huppert as a film extra desperately hoping to be noticed. The film draws on Fitoussi's own 2009 documentary about extras and takes a sharp look at the hierarchy of the film industry.

Finally, we look ahead to the Lumière Festival in Lyon, running from October 10 to 18. Alongside this year's Lumière Award going to Joel and Ethan Coen, the festival celebrates French cinema with screenings and masterclasses, including with Agnès Jaoui, a new series about pioneering filmmaker Alice Guy, plus anniversary screenings of "A Man and a Woman" and "Betty Blue".
