LASTMA rescues 670 victims in nine months

The General Manager, LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority says it has responded to 1,409 road crashes and rescued 670 victims in the past nine months.

The agency disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday, reaffirming its commitment to improving emergency response and promoting road safety across Lagos State.

The statement, signed by LASTMA’s Director of Public Affairs, Adebayo Taofiq, quoted the General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, as emphasising the need for public enlightenment, prompt incident reporting and strict compliance with traffic regulations.

Bakare-Oki said effective collaboration among road safety and emergency response agencies was essential to reducing casualties and improving safety outcomes.

He urged motorists, commercial transport operators, dispatch riders and pedestrians to exercise caution, obey traffic directives and promptly report road crashes, obstructions and other incidents requiring intervention.

The general manager advised road users to contact LASTMA through its toll-free short code, 3367, whenever an incident occurred.

He added that road safety required collective responsibility and the commitment of all road users.

The statement noted that road crashes often resulted in fatalities, serious injuries, economic losses and lasting emotional trauma for affected families.

It added that strict adherence to traffic regulations, regular vehicle inspections and responsible driving were essential to reducing the risks and consequences of road crashes.

LASTMA also acknowledged the support of other emergency response agencies, including the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Lagos State Ambulance Service, State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service.

The agency said the rescue of 670 accident victims highlighted the humanitarian dimension of its responsibilities, commending its personnel for their professionalism and dedication in coordinating emergency assistance under hazardous and unpredictable conditions.
