There has been a lot going on at Warner Bros. over the last few years, as the sale of the company has dragged on, with several potential suitors cropping up over that period who did their best to acquire the media giant. Now, Paramount has finally come out on top in a $111 billion acquisition that puts both companies under the umbrella of an even bigger corporation known as Skydance.
With that settled, the new organisation will be looking to capitalize on Warner Bros. biggest IPs to earn as much of that investment back as quickly as possible. One of the most historically profitable of those IPs is the Harry Potter franchise, and aside from the major TV adaptation, the biggest upcoming project we know about is Hogwarts Legacy 2.
The follow-up has been in development for a little while, and just before this big deal went through, Warner Bros released a lengthy document where they discussed the sequel for the first time.
In a statement to shareholders, Warner Bros. confirmed a lot about their upcoming project across all sorts of different mediums, including their gaming division. The pertinent part of the statement for Hogwarts Legacy fans and gamers more generally, reads as follows:
"Games remains an important growth lever as we work toward our long-term Studios segment goals. During the second quarter, we released LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight – the highest rated LEGO game ever – and Game of Thrones: Dragonfire, our second mobile game from the Game of Thrones universe. These releases marked the first launches under our refocused strategy centered around four key $1 billion+ franchises with disciplined investment behind fewer, higher conviction titles. We expect Games to more meaningfully contribute to segment profitability going forward as our pipeline expands, including the second installment of Hogwarts Legacy."
That statement is interesting because it directly references the difficulties that their gaming department has been through in past years, while at the same time confirming that they will be moving away from releases that could be considered risky. Given just how big the first game was, that absolutely doesn't apply to Hogwarts Legacy 2, meaning it will definitely play a core role in their strategy moving forward.
It will certainly be interesting to see just how different the developers manage to make the next game in the Hogwarts Legacy series. While the first release obviously went down well with fans, there were plenty of areas for improvement, particularly as it relates to the open-world they employed to deliver the story. At the same time, those in charge at Warner have previously claimed it will be directly connected to the upcoming HBO series, which in turn, directly adapts the books. That feels like a major risk, given how much people liked the original narrative, but we'll have to wait and see how far they have moved away from that.
