AGC rejects Zamri Vinoth’s bid to review charge over statement at KL rally

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 18 — The Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC) has rejected a representation by independent preacher Zamri Vinoth regarding a charge of making a statement likely to cause public alarm in connection with a gathering held in front of a shopping complex in the capital.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Nur Farhana Mohamad Poad informed Magistrate Faezahnoor Hassan of the decision during proceedings today.

“Today was fixed for the decision on the representation, and we wish to inform the court that the representation has been rejected,” she said.

Lawyer Nur Shafiqah Shafiyah Omar, representing Zamri, subsequently requested that the court fix dates for the trial.

Nur Farhana said the prosecution was expected to call six to seven witnesses to testify.

The court subsequently fixed April 21 and 22 next year for the trial.

On March 17, Zamri Vinoth, whose real name is Muhammad Zamri Vinoth Kalimuthu, 42, was charged with making a statement likely to cause public alarm and incite any person to commit an offence against public order through his Facebook account, “Zamri Vinoth”, at 12.22pm on February 3.

The statement was subsequently seen and heard by a 45-year-old man at Restoran Nasi Kandar Kudu on Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman here.

The charge was framed under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code (Act 574), which provides for imprisonment of up to two years, a fine, or both upon conviction.

Speaking to reporters outside the court, Nur Shafiqah said the representation was submitted to seek a review of the charge, including the possibility of reducing the charge or pursuing a similar outcome. — Bernama
