One Kaizer Chiefs player named in Pitso’s Bafana preliminary squad

Translate

Only one Kaizer Chiefs player has been named in Pitso Mosimane’s preliminary Bafana Bafana squad.

Bafana are preparing for this month’s 2027 CAF Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Guinea and Eritrea. They will also face Egypt in an away international friendly on 4 October 2026.

Mosimane was officially announced as Bafana head coach this week, and there was plenty of anticipation ahead of the release of his preliminary squad.

Jingles named 35 players, including 20 members of the squad that represented South Africa at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The only World Cup players who missed out were Bradley Cross, Khuliso Mudau, Thalente Mbatha and Evidence Makgopa, all of whom are currently sidelined with injuries.

With Hugo Broos no longer in charge, it was interesting to see whether Mosimane would make significant changes and introduce new faces to the national team.

Maboe is the only Kaizer Chiefs player in the Bafana prelim squad

Six uncapped players have been included in the preliminary squad: Lebone Seema, Cemran Dansin, Ronaldo van Neel, Puso Dithejane, Yanela Mbuthuma and Tshepo Mashiloane.

Kaizer Chiefs have had limited representation in the Bafana squad under Broos, and that trend appears to have continued under Mosimane.

Cross was the only Amakhosi player to make the World Cup squad, but with the left-back currently injured, Mosimane has selected Lebohanf Maboe, who narrowly missed out on the trip to Mexico.

The lack of Kaizer Chiefs representation in the Bafana team is once again likely to be a talking point, particularly among the club’s supporters.

Bafana play the 2027 CAF Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Guinea and Eritrea later this month.
