Absolute Batman #24 marks the turning point where Absolute Scarecrow goes from predator to prey. After Clayface pins Tim Drake's death on Batman, Bruce Wayne lets his rage out on Scarecrow, waiting for the villain to enter his maze to burn everything to the ground. Although Scarecrow manages to remove the mask protecting Batman from fear toxins, Batman plows through the fear and beats Jonathan Crane into submission, sews his mouth shut, and crucifies him. Scarecrow suffers a humiliating defeat, but not before revealing his ultimate form in an attempt to scare Batman: a disgustingly large spider with thin limbs and multiple knife-wielding tongues.
Absolute Scarecrow is much scarier and tougher than his traditional counterpart since his mere presence forces minds to succumb to a feeling of impending doom. The Absolute Universe's version of Jonathan Crane is powerful and twisted enough to convince Jim Gordon to leap to his death before Batman can intervene. Instead of a frail scientist hiding behind a gimmick, this Scarecrow is a cold-headed architect of chaos with a complex network of psychological traps. However, when pushed to the limit, Jonathan Crane reveals his true potential, represented by a grotesque appearance only Batman's mind can tolerate.

Batman leaves a gaping vulnerability that all but guarantees Absolute Scarecrow’s eventual return. Leaving an antagonist bound to a cross amidst an inferno is a textbook theatrical punishment, but in a comic book reality as harsh and mutation-heavy as the Absolute Universe, a blazing labyrinth is just an open door for revenge. Without witnessing Scarecrow's complete physical obliteration, the blazing fire only provides the precise environment for Crane’s toxin-infused body to scrape his charred remains from the ashes and rebuild himself into something far more monstrous.
A string of half-measures has already trapped Batman in a cycle of pain. Bruce Wayne has led his offense-first mindset to neglect his inner circle. For example, his failure to anticipate Absolute Scarecrow's attacks allowed Jonathan Crane to drive Jim Gordon and Joe Chill to gruesome deaths under the influence of fear toxins. Likewise, Batman's obsessive attitude left his core group of childhood friends vulnerable to the Ark M's experiments, and his hesitant attempt to talk down the Robins while pursued by an overwhelming gauntlet of villains invited Clayface to ambush them. Batman's failure to kill Scarecrow might soon add to this list.
