A new horror game on Steam has just been released for free, and it’s as if The Blair Witch Project had met with the Silent Hill franchise. Horror games become more popular each October, as the spooky season and Halloween make it a perfect time to play them. A free horror game on Steam was released in early October, letting players get in the mood for the period, but there are several titles being added to the platform, so it may be easy to lose track. Even so, a game that may be worth your attention was just released.

The game in question is called A Northern Evil: Tape One, and it’s already available on Steam. This indie title, developed and published by Skuggspel, is entirely free to download and keep forever, no strings attached. All you have to do is add it to your library. From there, you can download and play it at any given time, provided it remains listed on the platform. This is a short game described as the “first part of a story that will continue,” so anyone who enjoys it may actually see a sequel arriving in the future.

A Northern Evil: Tape One is a first-person atmospheric horror game that takes place in the north and remote reaches of Sweden. In this game, you’ll explore an abandoned village that clearly has something wrong with it, and investigate, all while trying to survive. The first-person perspective and the folk horror elements highlighted in the trailer give this game a found footage vibe similar to Blair Witch, which is creepy on its own. On top of that, however, there is also something reminiscent of Silent Hill.

This is especially true when it comes to the atmospheric horror set in a small town where everything seems out of place. The tight hallways in the abandoned houses and the knowledge that there is at least another stalking presence in this place make it feel like Kojima’s legendary Silent Hills P.T. Apart from the ambiance, the memories of the protagonist, Minna, also come into play within this horror game, making it further embrace the similarities with the Silent Hill franchise.

The developer explains that this game does not feature “conventional combat” akin to what you’d seen in games like Resident Evil, as this is a “tense, story-driven experience.” Even though the game was just recently released, fans of horror seem to be enjoying this new terrifying game on Steam. At the moment of writing, A Northern Evil: Tape One boasts a 96% Positive review status on Steam, showing that the vast majority of those who played it enjoyed the experience.

If you’re looking for something particularly creepy to play during the spooky season, A Northern Evil: Tape One may be a great option – and a free one at that. There are tons of other free horror games on Steam, too, in case you want something with a bit more combat or that leans less into psychological horror, so be sure to explore the platform.
