President John Dramani Mahama has congratulated Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on his re-election, expressing confidence that the outcome will provide an opportunity to deepen relations between Ghana and Brazil and strengthen cooperation among countries in the Global South.

In a message shared on Facebook, President Mahama described Lula’s victory as well-deserved and reaffirmed his commitment to advancing the longstanding ties between the two countries.

“Brazil and Ghana share a rich history, and I look forward to further strengthening our bilateral relations,” he said.

President Mahama also pointed to the Accra Reset initiative as a platform for the two leaders to advance shared interests, particularly the development priorities of countries in the Global South.

“Together, through the Accra Reset initiative, we will continue championing the Global South agenda for the betterment of our peoples,” he added.

Lula secured another term after defeating Flávio Bolsonaro of the Liberal Party in Brazil’s presidential runoff election on Sunday, October 25, 2026. Results announced by Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court showed Lula winning 51.79 per cent of valid votes, equivalent to 64,256,232 votes, while Bolsonaro obtained 48.21 per cent, or 59,826,041 votes.

The victory extends the tenure of the 80-year-old leader, who returned to Brazil’s presidency in 2023 after previously serving from 2003 to 2010.
