The world is on fire, the economy is in the toilet, and the supposed leaders of the free world might as well be movie characters themselves. It's times like these when all there is to do is laugh. While comedy movies aren't consistently pulling the blockbuster numbers at the box office that they used to, there are still plenty of them to be found. From raunchy sex comedies to throwback spoofs to a movie where a man fights hundreds of bucktooth rodents, the best comedies of the past five years have some seriously funny scenes.

Comedy isn't scientific. Even if a joke is perfectly constructed from setup to punchline, it isn't guaranteed to make everyone in the room laugh. That's what makes any list of funny scenes even more subjective than most. What tickles one person's funny bone will leave another's gut completely unbusted. As futile a gesture as this list may be, it's still worth running down the ten funniest scenes of the last five years that are likely to make at least one person chuckle, giggle, or even roar with laughter.

10 Beaver Battle - 'Hundreds of Beavers' (2022)

Easily the starkest example of a comedy film from the last five years that won't be to everyone's taste, Hundreds of Beavers is an absurd black-and-white slapstick comedy featuring an applejacker turned fur trapper facing off against a horde of the titular woodland critters. That those critters also happened to be portrayed by actors in cartoonish mascot costumes only heightens the absurdity of this delightfully silly film. Directed by Mike Cheslik and starring Ryland Tews, Hundreds of Beavers is an independent breath of fresh air that culminates with a very funny beaver battle royale.

Tews plays Jean Kayak, who spends the majority of the film trapping beavers in an effort to romantically woo a furrier. The escalating war between man and rodent leads to a confrontation in the beavers' multi-level dam that eventually turns into a chase involving a multi-beaver kaiju. Before that moment of bucktoothed Godzilla hilarity, there's a barroom brawl that's the perfect silly summation of the film. Kayak batters, skins, and disembowels beaver after beaver in the fight, with popcorn styrofoam standing in for the blood and guts. It's goofy fun that's guaranteed to put a stupid grin on the face of even the most hard-nosed cynic.

9 Naked Beach Fight - 'No Hard Feelings' (2023)

Nudity is something that can be used for a variety of effects, from erotic and titillating to outrageous and hilarious. No Hard Feelings falls into the latter category with an uninhibited fight scene that could only be accomplished in an R-rated comedy. It's a solid, if somewhat standard, follow-up to director Gene Stupnitsky's low-brow middle-school comedy Good Boys, and it gives Jennifer Lawrence an opportunity to go fully unhinged.

The Oscar winner plays Maddie, a down-on-her-luck thirtysomething who takes on the very odd job of dating sheltered 19-year-old Percy (Andrew Barth Feldman) in exchange for a car. Hilarity naturally ensues, with the most memorable moment a skinny-dipping scene gone awry. After their clothes are taken by some unruly teens, Maddie goes fully feral on them, delivering a buck-naked beatdown that is a shocking sight to behold. It's unfortunate the rest of the movie isn't as outrageously bold as this one funny as hell scene.

8 Girls vs Football Players - 'Bottoms' (2023)

One final fight to wrap up this trifecta of comedic fisticuffs. This one comes courtesy of Bottoms, Emma Seligman's dark teen comedy about two lesbian high school students who start a fight club in an attempt to get with cheerleaders. It's a big bloody campy satire that's equal parts Bring It On and Heathers. Many of the best bits of Bottoms are recurring jokes and visual gags, but its unexpectedly violent moments bring the most surprising laughs.

Rachel Sennott and Ayo Edebiri are PJ and Josie, two high school friends whose confrontation with their football team's quarterback sparks into a raging fire of feminism by way of fake female self-defense classes. All the high school hormones and insanity culminate in a climax where the girls take on a rival football team in a brawl that rivals Anchorman for how quickly it escalates. It's outrageous, over-the-top, quite violent, and endlessly hilarious.

7 Blood Donation - 'One of Them Days' (2025)

Another bloody funny scene comes in the delightful throwback buddy comedy One of Them Days. Built on the sturdy chemistry between Keke Palmer and SZA, and filled with a dozen incredible supporting performances, this movie is just fun. Its premise is simple, its lead characters are relatable, and the increasing ridiculousness of the situations they find themselves in is genuinely funny. None is funnier, however, than when they try to make some money by donating blood.

Preceding the scene, Palmer and SZA, as waitress Dreux and artist Alyssa, discover they have until the end of the day to scrape together their rent money and have already been rejected for a payday loan. That leads them to the blood bank, where Dreux gives more than her fair share, and a literal bloodbath ensues when Alyssa tries to intervene. The surprising level of blood spatter and the collective reactions of Palmer, SZA and Janelle James as the nurse elicit both shock and laughter.

6 Group Project - 'Joy Ride' (2023)

Unhinged drug use may be a nightmare in real life, but it's provided for some of the funniest scenes in movies, bar none. For the most recent example of this, look no further than Joy Ride. Following four Asian American friends on a wild ride through China, it's a movie that features a K-POP rendition of "WAP," a slap fight with Chinese businessmen, and a literally drug-fueled train ride.

Ashley Park, Sherry Cola, Stephanie Hsu, and Sabrina Wu make up the film's foursome who go on a trip through China to find Park's Audrey's birth mother so that she can close a lucrative business deal. That trip finds them taking a train where they unfortunately share a car with an American drug dealer, who makes them unwitting accomplices when the police start searching the train. With a bag full of drugs and nowhere to stash them, the group plugs and plays, snorting, swallowing and otherwise inserting them anywhere they can to hide them. It's a scene that's been played out in a variety of ways before, but made fresh by four very funny performers.

5 Benoit Blanc Solves the Dumb Mystery - 'Glass Onion' (2022)

The Knives Out franchise has provided some of the most unexpected laughs and delights of the last ten years, the best of which came in the second installment, Glass Onion. In all three movies, Daniel Craig's gentleman sleuth Benoit Blanc finds himself investigating groups of buffoons, none more exasperating than the rich and successful "disruptors" led by Edward Norton's insufferable tech bro billionaire Miles Bron. The character has some clear connections to real-world tech buffoons, as do all of his sycophantic friends, and it's a delight to watch Blanc tear them down with his inimitable southern charm.

As with all good whodunits, the Knives Out movies always climax with the detective unraveling the mystery in theatrical fashion. In Glass Onion, Blanc does so while simultaneously critiquing Bron and his pseudo-intellectualism. He's a hollow man who's never innovated or created anything of his own, building his fortune on the backs of others. While men like him never seem to get their just deserts in real life, at least in fictional ones, we can watch them get verbally eviscerated in a very funny scene.

4 Graveyard Interrogation - 'Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves' (2023)

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves attempted to cash in on the resurgent popularity of the titular tabletop roleplaying game, but underperformed due to its undeniable niche appeal. It's a big-budget fantasy comedy complete with fun practical effects and tons of funny set pieces. Filmmaking duo John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein take full advantage of the potential offered by a comedic interpretation of the source material. The best moments involve an obese dragon, an illusion spell that results in a melting Chris Pine and, in the film's funniest scene, a series of talking corpses.

In their search for a mystical MacGuffin, the party of heroes look for answers from the corpses of an army killed during battle. Restricted by a resurrection spell that limits each corpse to five questions, the party goes through a series of undead interrogations with increasing exasperation. It's the exact kind of situation that would come out of an absurd D&D campaign, and the puppet effects for each of the corpses add to the absurdity of the scene. Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is the kind of comedy that fans wish would have earned a sequel, but is made all the more special for being singular.

3 Edgar's Song - 'Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar' (2021)

Another silly musical number. While everyone was quick to sing the praises of Ryan Gosling and "I'm Just Ken" in Barbie, another himbo ballad preceded it but went as unappreciated as the movie it featured in. Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar is probably the most underrated comedy of the last five years, starring Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo as the titular Midwest women who get more than they bargained for on vacation in Florida. The duo gets plenty of laughs, whether it's with a musical number or by discussing the merits of women named Trish. Alas, the funniest scene belongs to Jamie Dornan and his acrobatic beach song.

As Edgar, the dimwitted henchman of the colorful villain, Dornan gets to showcase his previously untapped comedic abilities. Conflicted over his evil mission and his developing feelings for Wiig's Star, Edgar pours his heart out to some seagulls on the beach as he displays some fancy gymnastic moves and belts out classic lyrics like "I'm going up a palm tree like a cat up a palm tree who's decided to go up a palm tree." It's ridiculous, amazing, and should've been nominated for an Oscar just to have Dornan perform with some seagulls on stage.

2 Death by Bread Van - 'The Banshees of Inisherin' (2022)

The Irish black comedy The Banshees of Inisherin may not have any outrageous musical numbers or scenes of characters shoving drug balloons up their butts. However, it does have a wicked sense of humor that comes out through Martin McDonagh's sharply written script and the pitch-perfect performances of its cast. It also has what is, pound for pound, the most perfectly constructed joke in any movie from the last five years.

Colin Farrell plays the slightly slow-witted Pádraic, whose simple life of farming and drinking with his best friend Colm (Brendan Gleeson) is thrown into upheaval when Colm decides he doesn't want to be friends anymore. Pádraic goes to increasing lengths to rekindle their friendship, including warding off any potential other friends, such as the fiddler Declan (Aaron Monaghan). To send Declan away, Pádraic tells him his father has been hit by a bread van. It's a quick scene, featuring McDonagh's characteristically clever dialogue, but it's a perfect setup and punchline that can't be done justice in print.

1 Chili Dogs - 'The Naked Gun' (2025)

Last year's reboot of The Naked Gun brought the parody film back like gangbusters, featuring all the visual gags, puns, and slapstick the franchise had been known for. Liam Neeson is perfectly cast as Frank Drebin Jr., the son of the character played by the late Leslie Nielsen, and he does the role proud with a total commitment to the bit. Whether it's fighting off goons with a lollipop while dressed in a skirt, having a threesome with Pamela Anderson and a magical snowman, or monologuing in overwrought voiceover, he nails every scene. For all the clever lines he gets to say and outrageous scenes he gets to play, the funniest is the best kind of broad, featuring Neeson in a losing battle against some chili dogs.

While interrogating a suspect, Drebin resorts to some of his own bodycam footage for evidence, during which he's shown indulging in the breakfast of champions of a chili dog and black coffee, leading to the expected intestinal distress. The toilet humor of the scene is undeniably funny, but the cherry on top is Neeson's defeated performance watching his own diarrhetic disaster back and sadly admitting that he had five more chili dogs that day. The Naked Gun has lots of smart jokes, lots of dumb jokes, and the funniest scene of the last five years.
