Chennaiyin FC head coach Clifford Miranda acknowledged that Mohun Bagan Super Giant is “possibly the best team in the league” ahead of their Indian Super League 2026-27 fixture at the Salt Lake Stadium on Monday.

The new season is still fresh with both sides having played just two games. Chennaiyin is yet to register a win; it opened its campaign with a 1-1 draw at FC Goa before losing 0-2 at Bengaluru FC. Meanwhile, the Mariners began with a narrow 0-1 defeat to NorthEast United but recovered from a goal down to beat SC Delhi 2-1.

Speaking to reporters on Saturday, Miranda said his team will approach the Mohun Bagan test “cautiously”.

“But we want to control the game. We want to play in a very similar way to what we have been training for the last two months. We won’t change our style of play. That is given; that doesn’t change,” he began.

“Our preparation also depends on the quality of the opponent, and at this moment, you’re talking about possibly the best team in the league whose budget is, I think, four or five times higher than ours. But again, money doesn’t win you the match on the day. How you play is the most important thing, and that is what we are banking on,” Miranda added.

Both sides met each other last season in Kolkata, with Mohun Began coming away with a 2-0 win. One of the two scorers, Dimitrios Petratos, isn’t with the club anymore. Meanwhile, nine of Chennaiyin’s starting XI in that match have left the southern city.

Miranda, who oversaw one of the worst periods in the club’s history when it finished second to last in the 2025-26 season, believes that his players are “good enough” to get a positive result from the Kolkata giant this time around.
