In short:

A woman found dead in a Melbourne apartment block overnight has been identified by family as 21-year-old Jayda Allen Bonner.

A homicide investigation is underway; no charges have been laid over the incident, and one person arrested has since been released.

Ms Allen Bonner's aunt told the ABC that the family had been concerned for the young woman's safety and had tried to get help from authorities.

The family of a young woman found dead in a Melbourne apartment block overnight has told the ABC they had serious concerns about her safety and had recently sought help from police.

Twenty-one-year-old Jayda Allen Bonner was described by her aunt as a "gentle soul" with a "heart of gold."

"[She] would do anything to help anybody," Kellie Carter-Bell said on Saturday.

She said Jayda was a Yagera woman with family in Queensland.

Homicide detectives are investigating after police were called to an apartment in the inner-city suburb of Carlton in the early hours of Saturday.

Authorities said they were called to the apartment on Cardigan Street just before 2am and when they arrived, found the body of a woman.

While investigations are underway and no charges have been laid, Ms Carter-Bell said the family had been so concerned about Jayda's welfare that they had recently sought help from police.

"The really horrible, horrible thing is that the system's so broken that about six weeks ago, we begged for their help,"

she said.

"We begged for their help, and because we were ringing them and not Jayda, their attitude was, 'Well, what do you want us to do?'"

Victoria Police did not respond to the family's claim, with a spokesperson telling the ABC it could not comment while an investigation was underway.

Man arrested, then released

Police said a 60-year-old man was arrested and interviewed nearby after a crime scene was established in Carlton, but has since been released.

Forensic detectives were seen removing evidence from the complex on Saturday.

Ms Carter-Bell said she wanted the community to see Ms Allen Bonner's picture so they could understand her story.

"We are absolutely devastated," she said.

"We need people to know that the system is so broken," she said.
