Marcos lauds 'breakthrough' in Metro Manila Subway project

President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. celebrated a breakthrough in the Metro Manila Subway Project after a tunnel was finally dug from North Avenue to Quezon Avenue.

In a 24 Oras report from Ivan Mayrina on Wednesday, Marcos was short of breath after inspecting the ongoing construction for the Metro Manila Subway between the North Avenue and Quezon Avenue stations.

The President ascended 35 meters from the construction site underground. Despite this, Marcos was all smiles because he believed that a breakthrough was made after a one kilometer tunnel-long was made that now connects the two stations.

“Andito tayo sa Quezon Avenue dahila… ‘yung tunnel boring machine, lumusot na. Lumabas na. So, ‘yung ito. Kaya tayo nandito to celebrate breakthrough of the tunnel boring machine. Kaya't malapit… medyo hingal kami. Mataas yung inakyat namin,” Marcos said.

(We are at Quezon Avenue because… the tunnel boring machine was able to break through. Right here. So we are here to celebrate the breakthrough of the tunnelboring machine. That is why we are near… we are a bit out of breath, We had to climb really high.)

Quezon Avenue is only one of the 17 planned stations of the Metro Manila Subway Project. The entire subway will span 33 kilometers from Valenzuela City to Pasay City.

Once it is completed, the Ninoy Aquino International Airport will only be 40 minutes away from Valenzula— a drastic drop from the average one and a half hour. It is expected to serve half a million passengers daily once completed.

However, the project is extremely deep, with tunnels needing to be dug by large by tunnel boring machines.

It is estimated that the project will take five more years to complete, or by 2031.
