Kaizer Chiefs star Maboe pulls out of Bafana squad

32-year-old Lebohang Maboe has started this campaign in fine form, scoring twice and assisting twice in seven league matches. His performances in the centre of the park earned him a call-up to Pitso Mosimane’s Bafana squad, but the playmaker has pulled out because of injury. That’s bad news for the player and his club, who will be desperate to ascertain the extent of his issue.

Is Aubaas worthy of a Bafana slot?

31-year-old Bathusi Aubaas has made three Betway Premiership appearances this term with one assist. The last time he made double figures for league appearances was his 14 outings in the 2024-25 campaign. However, across that and the following season, he failed to score or assist a single goal. Several fans online have labelled him as a cow.

Injury situation at Chiefs

Goalkeeper Brandon Petersen picked up a knee injury in training and will miss up to six weeks. Meanwhile, striker Wandile Duba will miss up to two weeks with a hip and groin issue. Thabiso Monyane is also unavailable. The timing isn’t the worst, seeing as there’s an international break on the horizon. Duba has three goals from four Betway Premiership outings this term. His strike rate of 75% makes him the most clinical finisher at the club right now. He was conspicuous by his absence, as Chiefs fired a blank at the weekend to draw 0-0 with Golden Arrows.

Pitso starts his second tenure

Meanwhile, South Africa will be intrigued to see Bafana in action under new coach Pitso Mosimane. They face Guinea in an AFCON qualifier on Saturday, 26 September at 18:00. Maboe will be desperate to prove his fitness for this one, but faces a race against time to do so.
