Ridley Scott's Sci-Fi Classic Blade Runner Can Be Skipped For New 2099 Series

Those looking to jump straight into Blade Runner 2099 can do so without watching Ridley Scott's original movie, according to Michelle Yeoh.

Released in 1982, Scott's seminal sci-fi film introduced Harrison Ford as Rick Deckard, a blade runner who is tasked with hunting down rogue replicants. After a sequel from Denis Villeneuve in 2017, the franchise is now set to return with Prime Video's Blade Runner 2099, a series starring Yeoh and Hunter Schafer from creator Silka Luisa.

In a recent interview with Collider, Yeoh confirms that revisiting (or watching for the first time) the original Blade Runner and 2049 won't be necessary for 2099. Though the actor stops herself before revealing any spoilers, she teases that the story progresses in a way that makes it accessible even to viewers from younger generations who may not be familiar with Scott's film or its sequel. "I think the most interesting thing I've heard so far is that even if you've not watched the first two movies — because in this new generation, the younger audience might not have watched the first one — you would understand because of the way the story evolves. And I think the complication between the two characters, between Hunter [Schafer] and myself, it's... Say no more. [Laughs]"

Blade Runner 2099 not relying on viewers having seen the original film or 2049 isn't necessarily surprising. Though many plot details remain shrouded in mystery, the new series takes place after a war between humans and replicants that the replicants won, an event that drastically altered the balance of power present in the 1982 and 2017 entries.

The 50-year time jump after the Blade Runner 2049 ending, and the human and replicant war, has seemingly wiped the slate clean from a storytelling perspective, allowing Luisa to weave a tale that isn't especially connected to established story threads or characters. This makes sense from a creative standpoint, but it also makes sense from a commercial perspective.

Scott's original Blade Runner is now 44 years old, and even though it's widely hailed a sci-fi classic, it's reasonable to assume that many from younger generations may not be as familiar with it. What's more, Blade Runner 2049, despite not even being 10 years old, was a major box office disappointment and was underseen at the time of its release.

It's understandable, then, why 2099 tells a story in which Blade Runner and 2049 aren't required viewing. This opens the project up to the broadest possible audience, not just diehard fans.

Also starring Tom Burke, Dimitri Abold, Lewis Gribben, Johnny Harris, and Wil Coban, among others, Blade Runner 2099 consists of eight episodes. The season, which will be released as a binge drop, is already confirmed to not set up a season 2, with Luisa approaching the series as a standalone, contained story.

Though 2049 may not have been a theatrical hit, the film was well received critically, and Villeneuve's epic visuals and thought-provoking expansion of Scott's iconic original set a high bar. It remains to be seen whether Blade Runner 2099 will meet this bar, but Yeoh's recent comment confirms, at the very least, that it will be accessible to a wide range of viewers.
