'Both games we could easily have been on the winning side': New Zealand head coach Rob Walter after 2nd T20I defeat to India

New Zealand head coach Rob Walter believes his team has been competitive in the first two T20Is against India but has failed to make the most of important opportunities. After losing the second match by four wickets, following defeat in the series opener, Walter backed his players to recover and improve in the remaining games."Both games we could easily have been on the winning side of it, but weren't," Walter said."Probably missed out on a couple of opportunities each time where you probably would have sealed the game off for us. It's a bit of disappointment but also very happy with how we've played."

Walter said New Zealand had performed well for most of both matches despite limited competitive cricket together before the series. However, mistakes at crucial moments had cost them.

Walter praises batting recovery and Santner's bowling

New Zealand recovered from losing three wickets during the powerplay in the second T20I to post 180 runs. Walter praised Bevan and Glenn for helping the team reach a competitive total.

"Even back to last night, three down in the powerplay. It's not often you get to 180 from that position," Walter said."Bevan and Glen did a hell of a job there to get us to 180 in the end, which was a defendable total if we're honest."He also highlighted captain Mitchell Santner's four-wicket haul, praising his ability to change pace and control the ball even without much assistance from the pitch.

"Sometimes it's unappreciated just how skilful he is. I think last night was a great demonstration of his full repertoire of skill set," Walter said.Walter added that Santner's calm approach and leadership were important strengths for the team. He also admitted that fielding mistakes and a no-ball had hurt New Zealand in the second match.
