Taylor Swift earns biggest honor and dedicates it to 'ultimate showgirl' Dolly Parton as she leads winners at VMAs 2026

Taylor Swift earned the biggest award of the night at the MTV VMAs 2026 and dedicated the massive, record breaking win to country legend Dolly Parton as she became the most decorated artist in the history of the event with 33.

The 36-year-old megastar took home the coveted Video of the Year Moon Person for The Fate of Ophelia as she recognized the iconic musician.

She said: 'I want to dedicate this award to one person, and without whom this wouldn't be happening, and that person is the ultimate showgirl Dolly Parton.'

Swift was referencing her hit album The Life of a Showgirl as a new deluxe edition was released on Friday. Video of the Year was her lone nomination as an artist at the event but she also won Best Direction for her Opalite music video.

The A-lister continued her kind words about Dolly as she said: 'Every single song that she wrote, her storytelling was so vivid and so rich. 

'Listening to her songs, it's like watching the best music video you have ever seen in your life, every single time you hear what she has written.'

Parton passed away at 80-years-old on August 25 after a brief battle with an undisclosed cancer. 

Swift continued her acceptance speech by saying: 'And man, she handled this thing with such grace, and joy, and love, and gratitude for the fact that she got to do this.

'And everything that happened in her life or her career, she channeled back into love, and gratitude, and appreciation for her fans. I'm lucky I got to be one of them, and I will always be one of them.'

The Style hitmaker concluded her speech with a strong statement as she said: 'I think we were all very very lucky to share this planet with Dolly Parton for a time.'

Earlier in the night, Swift received the inaugural Artist Director Honors presented by pal Dakota Johnson and broke an epic record in the process.

With the crowning, she broke her tie with Beyonce, 45, as the most decorated artist of the VMAs, as they each came into Sunday's event with 30 gongs to their name.

Inasmuch as Beyonce has no nominations this year, Swift became the sole reigning record-holder.

She said during her acceptance speech: I got to tell you, though, the main reason why I love writing and directing music videos so much is because you, the fans, make it so much fun.

The MTV VMA Artist Director Honors celebrates a sustained and influential body of work from artists who have pushed creative boundaries and developed a clear directorial voice. Swift has directed 18 of her 60 music videos.

Swift has utilized music videos as an extension of her songwriting as she has directed the visuals for her tracks:  The Fate of Ophelia, Opalite, The Man, cardigan, willow, All Too Well: The Short Film, Anti-Hero, Bejeweled, Fortnight (feat. Post Malone), I Can See You (Taylor’s Version) (From The Vault), Karma (feat. Ice Spice) and Lavender Haze.

It was a big night for Swift as she debuted her new star-studded music video for Patient Zero right after her massive win. 

The 36-year-old superstar directed and penned the script for the video, which stars her close pal Dakota Johnson and acclaimed actor Colin Farrell.

It features a slew of dramatic scenes, including countless hot and heavy moments between Johnson and Farrell, who play a couple in a rocky romance, as well as a forbidden kiss between Farrell and model Cara Delevingne, who plays his mistress.

Swift also acts in the video as the late wife of Farrell's character who comes back from the dead to warn Johnson's character of his toxic ways.

Though Swift earned the highest honor, it was Madonna who had the biggest night as she earned seven total awards including Artist of the Year.

She joined Charli XCX and Troye Sivan to accept the award for Confessions II - The Film - yet her acceptance speech took an awkward turn when she quipped, 'I'm kind of unclear as to what this award is for?'

The awkward moment unfolded as Madonna took to the stage and declared, 'First of all I want to get this thing out of my a**. It's been there all night', before reaching behind her.

'My microphone is too short!', she then cried out.

She pulled Sivan and Charli into her, saying, 'Safety in numbers. I'm kind of unclear as to what this award is for. I guess it's for the short film?' before Charli opened the announcement card to jog her memory.

Madonna continued, 'I feel, like, good surrounded by people who like to dance, Charli, Troye', before adding 'you guys didn't get the joke about the laser up my a**, did you?'

'It was up there all night before I took it out.'

The 20-year-old rising star was emotional when her name was called as she beat out Bella Kay, Cortis, Magnus Ferrell, Malcolm Todd, Myles Smith, and Stella Lefty

'Dance is where everything happened for me in my life. If you love to dance, stand up... we're all equal on the dance floor.' Madonna then left the stage.

Meanwhile, Parton was celebrated multiple times during the telecast as Kacey Musgraves had viewers in tears as she performed a tribute to the country legend.

The 38-year-old country singer performed Parton's iconic 1974 track I Will Always Love You which left fans on social media in tears.

Musgraves was obviously emotional as she sang the lyrics written by the artist who is her lifelong hero.

Musgraves stunned as she hit the stage in a body-clinging fuchsia gown with feather-lined cuffs as her hair was done in a voluminous way to channel Parton's iconic loo

Host Snoop Dogg was obviously taken aback by the emotional performance as he reacted on stage by saying: 'That’s how you honor a legend... we love you, Dolly.'

Fans on X were also touched by the emotional tribute as one wrote: 'kacey musgraves dolly tribute making me tear up omg….. that was everything.' 

Musgraves has previously shared the stage with her hero Parton as they performed a rendition of the country legend's 1977 hit Here You Come Again at the 2019 Grammy Awards alongside Katy Perry.
