Alphabet’s (GOOG) (GOOGL) autonomous driving unit Waymo is expanding into Canada, signing a binding framework to launch fully autonomous ride-hailing services in Toronto, with the first rides targeted for 2028.
Waymo plans to begin manual mapping and validation drives in the city in the near term. The company will partner with Toronto-based Element Fleet Management to provide end-to-end fleet management services and expects to invest in hundreds of roles over time across fleet maintenance, validation driving, customer service, and operations.
“Expanding into Canada marks an important milestone in Waymo’s global journey,” said co-CEO Tekedra Mawakana, adding that the company aims to support safer streets and more accessible mobility in Toronto.
The expansion builds on Waymo’s existing Canadian ties, including its long-term investor relationship with the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board and its manufacturing partnership with Magna International (MGA).
