Godzilla Minus Zero Sequel Chances Addressed By Producer After Record-Breaking RT Score

Translate

Godzilla Minus Zero is bringing back the franchise once again, and its producer is commenting on whether more is coming after it.

Godzilla Minus Zero is a Japanese kaiju monster movie produced by Toho. Set in 1949, the film is a direct sequel to the groundbreaking franchise installment Godzilla Minus One, which came out in 2023. The movie sees writer-director Takashi Yamazaki return to the franchise, and features a leading cast including Minami Hamabe, Ryûnosuke Kamiki, Jun Kunimura, and Masami Nagasawa. The movie comes out in wide release in the United States on November 6.

In an interview with ScreenRant's Liam Crowley at New York City Comic Con, Godzilla Minus Zero producer Kazuaki Kishida addresses whether there will be a sequel to Godzilla Minus Zero. Kishida said that when he and the team were working on this project, they "don't think about any other film but the one [they're] working on" due to the fact that they have "no idea what's going to happen with it." According to the producer, the same was the case when they went from Godzilla Minus One to Godzilla Minus Zero. Check out the full quote from Kishida below:

ScreenRant: We love this take on Godzilla. Have you guys already started kicking around ideas of what a third movie would look like?

Kazuaki Kishida: So this was true from Minus One to Minus Zero as well but while we're working on any one Godzilla film, we don't think about any other film but the one we're working on. Because we have no idea what's going to happen with it.

At the moment, Godzilla Minus Zero's fate is still uncertain, because it has yet to come out in the United States. That said, there are some good indications that it will perform well. First off, the initial Rotten Tomatoes score for the film has been revealed, and with 40 reviews in so far, it sits at a 95%. If Godzilla Minus Zero keeps this rating, it would be among the higher-ranked films in Toho's franchise, topping even the well-liked 2016 film Shin Godzilla.

Godzilla Minus Zero is also coming after Godzilla Minus One made a huge splash three years ago. Not only did it achieve a record-setting 99% Tomatometer on Rotten Tomatoes, but it was also commercially successful. The film made $113 million worldwide, including over $57 million in the United States. This was a remarkable total for a Japanese-made Godzilla film, whose success was previously relegated primarily to its home country.

Godzilla Minus One was so well-regarded that it ended up winning an Oscar for Best Visual Effects. Godzilla Minus Zero would be hard-pressed to do the same in this awards cycle with The Odyssey, Dune: Part Three, and Avengers: Doomsday all in the mix, but it nonetheless puts the film on good footing to do well. Godzilla Minus Zero is coming to audiences with a reputation built up already, and if things come through, Kishida could be working on another sequel in no time.
