Several of the best horror movies of 2026 make a character regret something that seemed harmless minutes earlier. Scream's opening scene does it with Casey Becker answering the phone while making popcorn. The stranger has the wrong number, and even after he keeps calling, she’s willing to flirt and talk about scary movies. Then he mentions looking at her. Casey turns toward the patio doors, suddenly aware of how much of the kitchen is visible from outside. She can’t see him, but he knows exactly where she is.
Hanging up won’t get him out of the yard. Casey has been enjoying a conversation with someone who was already planning to hurt her, and now she has to work out how close he is. Casey starts locking doors before she knows who is outside. Several films on this list give their characters that same sickening moment of realizing they’ve made a mistake. They’ve trusted someone or followed them somewhere, and now they need to get away without letting that person know they’re afraid.
Watching at home adds an uncomfortable detail to Casey’s predicament. The phone, the kitchen, and the dark windows are all things that might be within reach of the couch. This year’s horror films have plenty more to be suspicious of after the credits. All ten selections received their US releases in 2026 and are now included with streaming subscriptions.
10 Primate
Streaming on Paramount+
The swimming pool is the safest place in Primate, which becomes a problem when someone needs to get out. Lucy and her friends retreat into the water after her family’s chimpanzee, Ben, contracts rabies and attacks them. He cannot swim, but their phones are back inside the house.
Ben stays on dry land, close enough to attack anyone climbing out. Roberts keeps the phones within reach of a desperate dash, making it easy to understand why someone would risk it. Miguel Torres Umba plays Ben in prosthetics, so the actors have something to struggle against when he grabs them (via FilmHounds). The attacks make every attempt to leave the water harder to watch, especially with Ben still waiting beside the pool.
9 We Bury The Dead
Streaming on Hulu
Ava volunteers to collect bodies after a military experiment devastates Tasmania, hoping the work will help her find her missing husband. But the bodies are beginning to move, and finding her husband may not mean finding him alive.
Daisy Ridley portrays Ava with a reason to keep going beyond the hope that her husband survived. She needs to find him, even if all she can do is identify his body. That makes her encounter with a grieving soldier so difficult to watch. His insistence that she dance with him turns sympathy into fear as she tries to appease him. Ava understands wanting someone back, but that understanding cannot make her safe around him.
8 Mother Of Flies
Streaming on Shudder
Mickey knows how suspicious the arrangement sounds. A woman in the woods says she can cure her cancer in three days, and her father thinks she’s a fraud. But he cannot offer Mickey another treatment, which makes his objections harder to hear.
The house alone is worth lingering over, with roots and vines swallowing the walls and moss serving as Mickey’s bed. Her father’s complaints about the food and plumbing bring some welcome humor, but Mickey has come here because she is dying. Zelda Adams makes her impatience with him understandable. Every objection threatens to take away the treatment she wants to believe in, even as Toby Poser’s Solveig gives him more reasons to worry.
7 Ready or Not 2: Here I Come
Streaming on Hulu
Grace survives her wedding night only to discover that killing her in-laws has made her a prize for four more wealthy families. This time, her estranged sister Faith is dragged into the hunt alongside her.
Grace barely gets out of her wedding dress before she and Faith are kidnapped for another hunt. Elijah Wood’s lawyer explains that the families cannot kill one another and must use weapons from the century their ancestors joined the council. That leaves a sniper and a sword-wielding hunter competing for the same victim under rules he insists on enforcing. Wood explains the rules as though Grace should appreciate the protections, while Weaving makes it clear she’s had enough of being hunted legally.
6 Undertone
Streaming on HBO Max
Evy’s headphones block out the house while she records her paranormal podcast. Her dying mother is upstairs, and the camera leaves enough darkness behind Evy to make concentrating on her laptop seem like a mistake.
The disturbing recordings she investigates with co-host Justin begin with a woman singing “London Bridge Is Falling Down” in her sleep. Replaying it should help explain what they’re hearing. Instead, the repetition makes the song increasingly unpleasant, especially as they start listening backward for other voices. Nina Kiri spends much of Undertone sitting at a table, but watching her remove the headphones and listen to the house can be worse than whatever is on the recording.
5 Hokum
Streaming on Hulu
The service bell for a locked, supposedly empty honeymoon suite keeps ringing in Hokum. Nobody wants to answer it. Adam Scott’s Ohm Bauman thinks the staff’s story about a witch is nonsense, but a missing employee gives him a reason to open the door.
Once inside, Ohm has to search a room the hotel has left to rot. The four-poster bed blocks his view, and the jacuzzi has been left full of water. Looking for the missing employee means getting close to both. McCarthy lets the search take long enough to make each new part of the room unwelcome. Scott, so dismissive of the witch story downstairs, now has to investigate it without the staff around to reassure him.
4 Backrooms
Streaming on HBO Max
There is something wrong with a door that requires a climb to reach, even before anyone opens it. Backrooms is full of these architectural irritations, with furniture in useless piles and corridors that keep going long after they should have reached the street.
Chiwetel Ejiofor’s Clark finds the entrance beneath his furniture store and starts bringing other people inside. Director Kane Parsons makes his curiosity contagious, until two employees take a camcorder in. Their grainy footage makes it difficult to see what’s ahead, but they keep walking farther from the entrance.
3 Send Help
Streaming on Hulu
Linda’s colleagues watch her Survivor audition tape and laugh while she works on the company jet. After it crashes, she builds shelter, finds food, and treats her boss Bradley’s injured leg. There is irony in that his job title is suddenly worth less than her ability to start a fire.
Rachel McAdams makes Linda’s satisfaction funny before making it uncomfortable. Dylan O’Brien’s Bradley has to compliment the woman he humiliated because she decides when he eats. Linda’s boar hunt gives Sam Raimi an excuse to drench McAdams in blood. The blood keeps coming after the kill is assured, with McAdams taking the splatter that Raimi once reserved for Bruce Campbell.
2 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple
Streaming on Netflix
Dr. Kelson plays Duran Duran, removes arrows from Samson’s skin, and discovers that the infected giant will come back willingly for another morphine dart. Fiennes talks to Samson as though he expects an answer, making it worth watching Lewis-Parry’s face for any sign that he understands. When Kelson takes morphine himself and falls asleep beside Samson, his attempt to understand the infection becomes a tense act of trust.
Spike has considerably less freedom with Jimmy Crystal’s gang. The blond wigs and tracksuits look ridiculous until the group starts skinning its captives. DaCosta stays with the captives’ suffering long enough to make Spike’s helplessness unbearable. All the while, back at the temple, Kelson is removing arrows from someone who could tear him apart, while Jimmy’s followers hurt people who cannot fight back.
1 Obsession
Streaming on Peacock
Bear wishes for his friend Nikki to love him more than anything. Her sudden interest is enough for him to overlook the fact that he wished it into existence. He only starts regretting the arrangement when she won’t leave him alone.
Navarrette’s performance makes Obsession one of the best horror movies of 2026, especially when Nikki watches Bear sleep. She approaches, pulls back, and tries again while he sleeps through it. Bear wanted this attention, but he can withdraw from the relationship once it frightens him. Nikki cannot make that choice. Even with him beside her, she looks desperate to get closer, and Navarrette makes that inability to settle extremely uncomfortable.
