As inundações catastróficas do mês passado no Nepal "foram um alerta para o mundo" sobre os riscos crescentes das mudanças climáticas, disse o premier nepalês nesta quinta-feira, na Assembleia Geral da ONU.

Cientistas afirmam que as mudanças climáticas tiveram um papel fundamental nas inundações de 26 de agosto, reforçando o argumento do Nepal de que os países montanhosos mais vulneráveis pagam um preço alto por uma crise pela qual têm pouca responsabilidade. 

O primeiro-ministro Balendra Shah, 36, afirmou que o aquecimento global está "desestabilizando a ecologia frágil do Himalaia", ao derreter o permafrost e as geleiras, o que acelera os perigos. "O Nepal contribui com menos de 0,1% das emissões de gases do efeito estufa. Não criamos esta crise, mas pagamos por ela."
