Indonesia seeks to bolster strategic port corridors at IMT-GT forum

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia is pushing to strengthen strategic port corridors through the Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand Growth Triangle (IMT-GT) cooperation framework, as quoted from a statement released here on Thursday.

Deputy for Economic and Investment Cooperation at Indonesia's Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs Edi Prio Pambudi emphasized the importance of transformative steps in subregional cooperation to enhance the resilience of regional connectivity and supply chains.

"Regional supply chains are no longer mere lines on a map; they are the 'living arteries' that unlock real economic opportunities for subregional communities,” Pambudi said during the 33rd IMT-GT Senior Officials' Meeting (SOM) in Medan, North Sumatra.

“When major shipping lanes such as the Malacca Strait experience a slowdown, the impact is immediately felt by the subregional economy," he added.

The discussions are part of an ongoing evaluation of projects outlined in the IMT-GT Implementation Blueprint 2022-2026, which will serve as the foundation for drafting the subsequent blueprint for 2027-2031.

Pambudi noted that regional connectivity must be developed not merely as a physical infrastructure network, but as an integral part of a robust supply chain capable of sustaining the economic activities of communities within the region.

During the meetings, Indonesia also underscored the importance of solidifying partnerships with external development partners, including the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

The ADB has consistently provided support through capacity-building initiatives, green city assistance, and the formulation of the upcoming implementation blueprint.

Furthermore, Indonesia urged that information regarding the ADB's facilities and programs be disseminated more effectively to local governments, which act as key stakeholders in executing IMT-GT cooperation initiatives.

The 33rd IMT-GT SOM is part of the 32nd IMT-GT Ministerial Meeting series held in Medan from September 7 to 10. The meeting also marked the official handover of the IMT-GT SOM chairmanship from Thailand to Indonesia.
