Over 11,000 sign up for Hong Kong taxi, ride-hailing test, beating expectations

More than 11,000 residents have applied to take the joint examination for taxi and ride-hailing car driver permits, exceeding the Hong Kong government’s expectations, according to the city’s transport minister.

Secretary for Transport and Logistics Mable Chan also gave more details on Monday about a separate scheme that would allow mainland yacht owners to sail their vessels into city waters, saying they had achieved a good passing rate in the relevant test.

Hong Kong recently passed legislation to regulate ride-hailing services in the city, capping the number of vehicle permits for such services at 10,000.

Residents have to pass a joint assessment for taxi and ride-hailing drivers to apply for a ride-hailing vehicle permit.
