GEORGE TOWN, Aug 22 — Penang’s ferry services recorded a 7.28 per cent increase in passenger traffic between January and June this year compared to the same period in 2025.

Penang Port Commission chairman Datuk Yeoh Soon Hin said that passenger volume in June alone reached 262,424. This total comprised 199,861 pedestrians, 61,941 motorcyclists, and 622 cyclists.

“These figures clearly reflect the sustained demand for ferry services as a key mode of public transportation in the state,” Yeoh said in a statement today.

To further encourage the use of public transit, the commission announced that passengers will be granted free ferry rides during the upcoming Merdeka celebrations.

Yeoh noted that these festive initiatives are designed to invite both residents and visitors to experience the service while raising awareness about the importance of sustainable urban mobility.

The ferry continues to serve as a critical connector between the island and the mainland, supporting the local economy and promoting cultural exchange and domestic tourism.

The commission also aims to increase ridership by consistently improving service frequency, cleanliness, and safety standards.

“We are committed to ensure that Penang’s ferry services remain the preferred choice of public transportation that is comfortable, safe, and community‑friendly,” Yeoh added.
