Cathy Babao is overwhelmed with gratitude after her successful surgery for breast cancer, thanking those who have offered prayers and messages of encouragement as she battles the disease.

The writer and grief coach gave an update on her medical journey through her Instagram page on Thursday, Aug. 20.

“When I opened my eyes in the recovery room and saw my surgeon’s face, my first thought was: ‘Thank you, Jesus. I’m still alive!'” she recounted. “And through the fog of anesthesia came an overwhelming sense of gratitude and grace.”

“Thank you to every single person who prayed for me. I felt your prayers as I entered the OR, as I lay waiting to be wheeled in, and in those quiet moments when there was nothing left to do but surrender,” she said.

Babao admitted that she still has frightening moments but she underscored how the support she has been receiving helped ease her fears.

“Perhaps that is what this season has taught me: faith does not always make fear disappear. Sometimes, it simply teaches us to walk through it,” she wrote. “Today, I am profoundly grateful to be alive.”

Babao made mention of her support system, which includes her doctors, husband and children, while also extending her prayers to those who are facing battles similar to hers.

“The road to healing is still long. But I will not borrow fear from the days ahead,” she said. “I will meet them with faith. I will meet them with hope. I will meet them with a grateful heart.”

“And I will continue to pray for all those walking their own difficult roads—for those waiting for good news, facing a diagnosis, entering an operating room, or quietly battling their own fears,” she continued. “May we hold one another up. May we remind each other that we never walk alone.”
