Indonesia targets 66 hospital upgrades by 2027

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia’s Health Ministry aims to complete the revitalization of 66 regional public hospitals (RSUD) from Type D to Type C by 2027 to expand equitable and quality health services nationwide.

Speaking at a press conference with the Indonesian Government Communications Agency (Bakom) in Jakarta on Wednesday, Deputy Minister of Health Dante Saksono Harbuwono confirmed that the phased initiative is to improve health services in remote and frontier regions currently lacking essential surgical and specialist infrastructure.

"President Prabowo Subianto has instructed us to revitalize district, village and regency hospitals which do not yet have Class C hospitals and lack operating rooms,” Dante said.

According to Dante, the first phase will upgrade 66 regional hospitals from Type D to Type C.

He explained that the development and revitalization had been carried out in stages since 2025 and would continue through 2027.

For the 2026 phase, 18 hospitals are currently under construction while two others remain in the tendering process.

Under the upgrade program, former type D facilities will be standardized to deliver optimal basic specialist care, equipped with modern medical technology, standardized operating rooms, and dedicated medical staff.

To ensure optimal operations following the facility upgrades, the ministry will directly assign doctors to the revitalized hospitals.

"This is our acceleration to provide guaranteed healthcare services from Sabang to Merauke, in all villages and cities with the same quality. Later, doctors will be assigned to these areas," Dante said.
