Third person charged over crash in allegedly stolen vehicle that killed boy

Mhurrigan Burns, 22, has been charged for allegedly driving a stolen vehicle which rolled off an embankment in Cairns, killing a 12-year-old boy.

Mr Burns is the third and final surviving occupant in the vehicle to be charged in relation to the crash, alongside a woman, 19, and another man, 20.

All three matters are before the Cairns Magistrates Court.

A 22-year-old man has been charged over the death of a 12-year-old boy who was a passenger in an allegedly stolen vehicle that crashed in Far North Queensland in June.

Mhurrigan Burns is facing nine charges, including three counts of dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death or grievous bodily harm.

Other charges relate to him allegedly breaking in to steal the car, driving the vehicle while over the alcohol limit and driving while on a disqualified licence.

One charge is in relation to an alleged breach of bail.

He is the last of three surviving occupants in the car to be charged.

Police allege that on June 21, Mr Burns broke into a property on Pomona Avenue and stole a Toyota Fortuna before driving the vehicle to the Cairns suburb of Stratford.

Police were called to the scene after 4am, following reports the car had rolled off an embankment.

A 12-year-old boy died at the scene after being thrown from the car during the crash.

Mr Burns and two other passengers, a 19-year-old Yarrabah woman and 20-year-old Oscar Samual Lee Savage, were taken to Cairns Hospital.

Mr Burns's matters are before the courts.

Mr Savage and the 19-year-old woman have been charged with offences relating to the theft of the vehicle and other driving-related matters.
