IPL Players Quote Stunning Rs 40 Crore Retention Fee Ahead Of Mega Auction: Report

Translate

The IPL 2027 auction is the last mini-auction in the current cycle before next year's mega auction. While in a mini-auction most teams will have only five to six slots available, in a mega auction teams start from scratch. Hence, mega auctions are always well-followed affairs. The next mega auction (for the IPL 2028 edition) is over a year away and will most likely be held in December 2027.

According to a report in Cricbuzz, some 'top-tier' IPL players have "quoted INR 40 crore as their desired retention fee". The report stated that it has been conveyed to their respective franchises that they are willing to stay with their teams if that amount is paid. It added that more players may opt for that route, especially if they believe they have a high chance of attracting lucrative bids at the auction.

A Rs 40 crore salary is unheard of in the IPL. Rishabh Pant was bought by Lucknow Super Giants for Rs 27 crore at the IPL 2025 auction. To date, that is the highest amount a franchise has paid for a player at an auction.

Currently, the total purse available to a team is Rs 120 crore. The report stated that for next year's mega auction, the purse may increase to around INR 150 crore.

The deadline for all 10 franchises to finalise their retention and release lists ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2027 mini-auction has been extended by two days to November 17, while the auction itself is scheduled to take place in Goa on December 16.

The deadline was initially set for November 15, coinciding with the fifth One-Day International (ODI) between India and New Zealand, according to Cricinfo.

Following the submission of retention and release lists, the IPL will share the registered players' pool with the franchises. The teams will then shortlist players before the final auction list, along with the order of sets, is circulated in the week leading up to the auction.

Two player trades have already taken place ahead of the auction.

In a significant move, Delhi Capitals have brought back their former captain Rishabh Pant from Lucknow Super Giants, with left-arm wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav moving in the opposite direction.

In another trade, Delhi Capitals sent fast bowler T Natarajan to Sunrisers Hyderabad in exchange for leg-spinner Zeeshan Ansari.
