Jason Statham's 107-Minute Action Thriller Officially Finds Salvation On Streaming After $53M Box Office Disappointment

Translate

Jeff Dodge (he/him), a published author and graduate of Western Washington University, has been a TV news editor for many years and has had the chance to interview multiple reality show stars, including Randy Jackson, Nick Cannon, Heidi Klum, Mel B and John Cena. Fun Fact: he’s been to every single Idol Live! Tour.

Jason Statham's 2026 action thriller has found success on streaming platforms after a disappointing run in theaters. The actor is known for starring in several action films throughout his career. In recent years, his credits have included The Meg, Hobbs & Shaw, F9, Fast X, Meg 2: The Trench, Expend4bles, The Beekeeper and the just-released Mutiny, which had to settle for sixth place at the box office with an opening weekend haul of $7.5 million while competing with blockbusters like Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Insidious: Out of the Further and The Odyssey.

Like Mutiny has proven, not all of Statham's movies are hits at the box office. Earlier this year, he starred in an action thriller called Shelter. By the time it left theaters, it had only earned $53 million against a reported $50 million budget. In Shelter, the action star plays former Royal Marines Commando and assassin Michael Mason, who has stepped away from his previous life. His past comes back to haunt him when he tries saving a girl from a dangerous agency. Reviews for Shelter were very mixed, with critics giving it a 49% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Shelter Continues Jason Statham's Streaming Dominance

In May, the Ric Roman Waugh-directed Shelter was released on Starz, and three months later, the film is still performing exceptionally well. On Starz's Top 10 U.S. movies streaming chart, Shelter is currently at No 2, behind Michael. The Housemaid, Queenpins, Beast, Roman J. Israel, Esq., Trouble Man!, Escape Plan, Love Jones and Life make up the rest of the Top 10, as of August 27, 2026. Last week, Shelter was at No. 3, which means it's moved up and has proven to be even more popular just days later.

Despite a poor theatrical run, Shelter, which also stars Bodhi Rae Breathnach, Bill Nighy and Naomi Ackie, has found salvation on streaming platforms. A lot of Statham's past films have found success on streaming as well, like Homefront, A Working Man, The Beekeeper, Wrath of Man and Meg 2: The Trench.

Statham Has 2 Major Avenues For New Streaming Hits Next Year

Shelter's current domination on Starz's streaming chart spells good news for Statham's film career going forward. Mutiny may have had a rocky start in theaters this month, but if Shelter is any indication, it could have the same trajectory during its second life on streaming.

Next year, Statham will be starring in two movies: The Beekeeper 2 and Jason Statham Stole My Bike. The former is the sequel to his 2024 film The Beekeeper, which grossed $162.6 million and remained a hit when it was released on Prime Video. Jason Statham will reprise his character, Adam Clay, from the first film. Unlike The Beekeeper franchise, Jason Statham Stole My Bike is a comedy that will see the actor play a fictional version of himself alongside Hannah Waddingham. Both films have great opportunities to become streaming hits, regardless of their box office numbers.
