Harry Kane said he can see himself in the future kicking a football in the NFL and possibly parlaying that time in the United States with playing for an MLS team.
England’s national team captain and Bayern Munich striker, Kane pondered such possibilities in a session with reporters Wednesday. But his immediate priority was to finalize a new deal with his Bundesliga club, which he said was “fairly close” to completion.
As for a second career in sports, Kane’s love of golf is well known, and the 2-handicap golfer has discussed how difficult it would be to become a professional.
The London native, 33, also is a huge fan of the NFL’s New England Patriots and its former superstar quarterback Tom Brady. Becoming a kicker is something that Kane would like to explore, but not while he’s “still on the top of my game here” with football, he said.
“That is something I will try and look at a bit more seriously,” Kane told reporters at St. George’s Park, the English national teams’ training facility in Needwood, Staffordshire. “It all depends on what happens in my career over the next five or six years, the motivation and what I want to do. The NFL is a lot more realistic than the golf one, let’s put it that way.”
Football players making the transition to American football is not something new, so Kane certainly has the foundation with his skill set. But one of the most prolific goal scorers for his clubs and country said it wouldn’t happen quickly.
“I take penalties and it is a very similar pressure and technique,” Kane said. “If I did that, in terms of training, I would be closer to that more than to any other sport. But as I know, with all elite sports, when you watch it on TV, people make it look easy, and you think it is possible, but that is not always the case.
“If I was to do it, it is something I would take seriously. I would take six months to a year to try and practice before.”
Kane could combine his interest as an NFL kicker with a concurrent stint in the MLS, he discussed publicly for the first time on Wednesday.
“Maybe if I am in the MLS in the future or somewhere like that it might be a thing where you could connect the two, with the seasons,” he said. “But it is in the back of my mind because right now, I am feeling that I want to play as long as I can here.”
Considered one of the best players in the world and one of England’s greatest ever, Kane scored six goals in the World Cup this summer as England advanced to the semifinals and lost to Argentina. He did not play in the third-place match, when England won a wild 6-4 victory over France on July 18 in Miami Gardens, Fla.
Kane said on Wednesday that he flew to New York after that match but didn’t watch the World Cup final, won by Spain over Argentina on July 19 in East Rutherford, N.J.
“I didn’t watch the final,” he said. “I was trying to ignore everything about it.”
Instead, he played golf.
