UN thanks Thailand for peacekeeping service and sacrifice

BANGKOK — The United Nations has thanked Thailand for its contribution to UN peacekeeping missions, with nearly 300 Thai military and police personnel currently serving in three missions around the world.

UN Peacekeeping said in a Facebook post that Thailand is the 33rd-largest contributor of peacekeepers to the United Nations. Thai personnel are currently serving with the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei, the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP), and the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS).

“Thank you Thailand for your service and sacrifice,” the UN said in a separate post, highlighting the risks and difficult conditions faced by Thai peacekeepers.

Thailand has contributed troops to UN peacekeeping operations since 1958. Thai peacekeepers have served in more than 20 UN missions to date.

Ten Thai peacekeepers have died while serving under the UN flag, according to UN Peacekeeping.

“We honour their memory,” the UN Peacekeeping post said, expressing gratitude to Thailand for the service and sacrifice of its peacekeepers in conflict-affected areas around the world.
