Metro Manila areas still at ‘acutely’ unhealthy air quality level

MANILA, Philippines — The level of air quality in some cities in Metro Manila remained under “acutely unhealthy” on Tuesday afternoon, due to lingering haze associated with the fires in Kalimantan, Indonesia, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources – Environmental Management Bureau (DENR-EMB) said.

In an advisory, the DENR-EMB – National Capital Region (NCR) reported that the following areas maintained 201 to 300 air quality index (AQI), which means air pollution may cause breathing troubles and other similar risks:

• Paranaque (Don Bosco) (285 AQI)
• Quezon City (Ateneo) (244 AQI)
• Las Pinas (243 AQI)
• Malabon City (234 AQI)
• Manila (234 AQI)
• Taguig (TUP) (232 AQI)
• Valenzuela (228 AQI)
• Marikina (Parang) (224 AQI)
• Muntinlupa (Filinvest City) (222 AQI)
• San Juan City (219 AQI)
• Mandaluyong (214)

Meanwhile, some areas in NCR below logged AQI ranging from 151 to 200, or under “very unhealthy” level, which indicates that those with lung and heart conditions may worsen.

The DENR-NCR reported early Tuesday that several areas in Metro Manila recorded high PM2.5, which refers to fine particulate matter measuring 2.5 micrometers or less in diameter.

The agency said the haze and smoke from the ongoing fires in Indonesia may have been swept by strong winds toward the country. /mr
