Rebecca Yarros' Fourth Wing series has taken the world by storm, quickly becoming one of fantasy's most popular modern phenomenons. Since Violet Sorrengail's first foray into Basgiath War College, the Empyrean series has grown into a global romantasy sensation, with Iron Flame and Onyx Storm becoming some of the most talked-about novels and leaving fans hyped for the final entries in Yarros' planned five-book saga.
That anticipation is now firmly focused on the still-untitled fourth mainline novel, which Yarros has confirmed is in development, although it currently has no announced release date. Meanwhile, Fourth Wing is preparing for an equally significant jump to television, with Prime Video officially ordering its live-action adaptation to series and Meredith Averill serving as show-runner.
At this point, Fourth Wing is rapidly becoming much more than a bestselling book series, with television, graphic novels, and other projects expanding the Empyrean universe. And in 2027, the franchise officially expands into a completely new genre with a highly anticipated jump into gaming.
Fourth Wing Ventures Into New Territory
Fourth Wing is officially spreading its wings into another corner of gaming with Fourth Wing: Formations, a new WizKids tabletop release that transforms Rebecca Yarros' fantasy world into a strategy-focused card game. Instead of following Violet Sorrengail through Basgiath's deadly trials, players effectively become generals, organizing the forces of Navarre and trying to build powerful formations from the four quadrants of the war college.
The game's 54-card deck replaces the traditional suits found on playing cards with Riders, Scribes, Infantry, and Healers, directly incorporating Basgiath's structure into its core rules. Formations itself is described as a Fourth Wing spin on the classic card game Kings in the Corner, challenging players to coordinate the different quadrants while protecting Navarre.
The deck isn't limited to the proprietary game, either, as WizKids says it can also function as a standard deck for playing traditional card games. The package additionally includes 50 damage tokens, a rule sheet, and a travel pouch.
Fourth Wing: Formations Is Arriving In 2027

Asmodee's Canadian listing describes Formations as supporting one to four players, with individual games lasting roughly 15 to 30 minutes and a recommended age of 10 and up. That makes it a considerably more accessible entry point into the Empyrean universe than a sprawling tabletop RPG or heavyweight strategy game might have been.
Fourth Wing: Formations is currently available to preorder for $19.99. While several retailer pages continue to advertise a November 2026 launch, WizKids' own listing now gives an estimated Q1 2027 release, placing its current official window somewhere between January 1 and March 31, 2027. As with most preorders, WizKids notes that the date remains subject to change.
For a franchise that began as a blockbuster romantasy novel series and is already headed for television, Formations represents another step toward turning Fourth Wing into a much broader multimedia property, and time will tell if the switch to tabletop is a popular choice among the franchise's dedicated fan-base.
