Will there be a Vigil season 4?

The final episodes of Vigil season 3 have now been made available on BBC iPlayer, bringing to an end Amy and Roses's investigation on Svalbard.
The thriller series, which was created by Tom Edge and stars Suranne Jones and Rose Leslie, has now been airing since 2021, with each season following Amy and Rose as they investigate suspicious deaths in military settings - each with a timely resonance.
But are we likely to see another investigation conducted by the duo, when would a fourth season air and who from the cast would return for new episodes?

It sounds as though the jury is firmly out at this point as to whether there will be a fourth season of Vigil.
Speaking exclusively with Radio Times, the drama's creator, Tom Edge, said that there were likely to be plenty of options when it came to stories for future seasons, but the narrative arc he had been charting across seasons 1-3 had "been settled".
When asked about the potential for a fourth season, he said: "Regrettably, the world remains complicated and finds new ways to evolve towards instability, danger and the rest. So I don't think we would ever find ourselves short of stories. I think certainly this time around, we put the show in a place where we feel that this arc across three seasons has been settled.
"I think we will see how it goes. But one of the pleasures of the show is it doesn't feel like it is a show that has to return on an annual ticking clock basis. So I think we can leave it open, but certainly for this season, it felt like it was the culmination of a bunch of questions that we've asked across three seasons. I was happy to take it to that point."
This certainly sounds as though it's a 'wait and see' approach, and that we might not heard for some time if the show is to come back.
This was the case for season 3 as well, with that run of the show only being confirmed in February 2025, over a year after season 2 first aired.
For now, we will just have to watch this space, but we will make sure to keep this page updated with any news as and when we get it.
When would a potential Vigil season 4 be released?

We don't yet know when a fourth season of Vigil would air on BBC One and iPlayer, as the drama has not yet been renewed.
However, if it were to return, we imagine it could be at least a couple of years until we see new episodes. Creator Tom Edge has said that "one of the pleasures of the show is it doesn't feel like it is a show that has to return on an annual ticking clock basis". This means season 4 releasing in 2027 seems extremely unlikely.
We would imagine that a 2028 or 2029 release date would be more likely - but we will have to wait and see if and when any new episodes materialise.
Who would return to star in a potential Vigil season 4?

We don't yet know for certain who would be back for a season 4, but would it really be Vigil without Suranne Jones as Amy and Rose Leslie as Kirsten?
We would imagine they would both return, while other mainstays Gary Lewis and Orla Russell would also likely be back.
Thus far, Dominic Mafham is the only other cast member to have appeared in more than one season, meaning he could also return, after appearing in seasons 2 and 3.
However, the rest of the cast would likely be made up of newcomers, with a mix of big name stars and up and coming actors filling out crucial roles in the new plotline.
Here's a full list of the cast members we could see potentially returning for Vigil season 3:
- Suranne Jones as Amy Silva
- Rose Leslie as Kirsten Longacre
- Gary Lewis as Colin Robertson
- Orla Russell as Poppy Silva
- Dominic Mafham as Sir Ian Downing
Is there a trailer for Vigil season 4?
There isn't a trailer available for Vigil season 4 at this point, as not only has it not yet been filmed, but a fourth season hasn't yet been confirmed.
We could be in for quite a wait, but if and when any new footage is released for a fourth season, we will add it in here. For now, you can rewatch the trailer for season 3 here.
