A British holidaymaker has died in Gran Canaria after being run over by a drunk and drugged-up driver.

The 25-year-old was killed in the sunshine island's resort of Playa del Ingles late on Friday night.

The owner of the car that hit him tested positive for cocaine and was also found to be over the drink-drive limit according to police sources.

One local report said the unnamed Brit had travelled to the area to attend Winter Pride Maspalomas which started on November 2 and is due to finish today.

The alarm was raised at 11.35pm on Friday following the accident in an avenue called Italy Avenue.

The dead man is said to have been crossing the road in an area not designated for pedestrians.

Police and paramedics rushed to the scene but could do nothing to save him.

Although the car driver was found to be above the drink-drive limit, his reading was just below the level which would have been enough to constitute a road traffic crime.

Local town hall-employed police are preparing a report they will submit to a local investigating judge who is expected to open a manslaughter probe.

It was not immediately clear today if a formal arrest was made at the scene.

A spokesman for a regional government-run emergency response co-ordination centre said: 'At 11.35pm on Friday an alert was received about a person having been hit by a vehicle on Italy Avenue.

'The call was routed to the appropriate departments following an assessment.

'Agencies involved in responding to the incident included the Canarian Emergency Service, local police and National Police.

'On the medical side, the Canarian Emergency Service coordinator after speaking with the callers and gathering the necessary information, dispatched an advanced life support ambulance staffed with medical personnel and a basic life support ambulance.

'Upon arrival at the scene, medical personnel assessed the individual, a 25-year-old man, and confirmed his death, which resulted from the severe injuries he had sustained.'

It is not known if the man who died was alone when he was hit or with family or friends. The car driver is understood to be a local man living on the island.

More details are expected to be released by police later today or tomorrow.
