Heat 2 is based on his own novel, written with Meg Gardiner.
The follow-up film will see him assume directing duties while also writing the screenplay, with the project being teased as "extraordinary" by an insider, according to TheWrap, and the scale of the project being described as "John Wick times 1,000" and "Spartacus with machine guns".
Variety previously reported that British actor Stephen Graham had joined the cast, with him believed to be playing a younger version of Neil McCauley, the character famously portrayed by Robert De Niro in the original film.
He later confirmed his casting, while c0nfirming that he's set to appear alongside Christian Bale and Leonardo DiCaprio, who will undertake the roles of Al Pacino's Vincent Hanna and Val Kilmer's Chris Shiherlis, respectively.
Speaking on Heart Breakfast with Jamie Theakston and Amanda Holden, Graham said: "I’m really looking forward to it. Fear and excitement live in the same place so there is a little bit of fear which is healthy."
