Stellenbosch FC youngster makes South African history

Plaatjies scored all three goals as Stellenbosch FC beat Marumo Gallants 3-1 in a Betway Premiership clash at Athlone Stadium on Friday.

The 20-year-old delivered a dream debut and immediately announced himself as one of South Africa’s most exciting young talents.

QUWAN PLAATJIES MAKES HISTORY

Born on 6 April 2006, Plaatjies has overcome significant adversity. He lost his mother at a young age. A dedicated schoolteacher then took him in and supported his football ambitions in the Western Cape.

His football journey started in Protea Park during his primary school years. His talent soon stood out. He later joined the Stellenbosch FC Academy and progressed through the DStv Diski Challenge.

Plaatjies built a reputation as a prolific goalscorer in the reserve league. His performances eventually caught the attention of Gavin Hunt and the Stellenbosch FC first team.

Gavin Hunt handed Plaatjies his first professional start against Marumo Gallants. The youngster needed only 13 minutes to repay his coach’s faith.

Plaatjies opened the scoring with a composed right-footed finish. He then doubled the lead in the 28th minute with a header. The youngster completed his hat-trick in the 54th minute. His third goal sparked wild celebrations as Stellenbosch FC moved closer to victory.

Plaatjies later left the pitch to a standing ovation. His three goals helped Stellenbosch FC secure a 3-1 victory.

The performance also created a unique record. Plaatjies became the first player in PSL history to score a hat-trick on his professional top-flight debut.

STELLENBOSCH FC HAVE A NEW STAR

Plaatjies’ breakthrough highlights the work done by the Stellenbosch FC Academy. The club developed the youngster through its youth structures before giving him an opportunity on the biggest stage.

His achievement also carries deep personal meaning. Plaatjies dedicated his dream debut to his late mother. The 20-year-old has now gone from DStv Diski Challenge goalscorer to PSL history-maker.
