Police, military join effort to contain Lore Lindu fires in Sulawesi

Forest and land fires have affected about 100 hectares inside Lore Lindu National Park,
Sigi, Central Sulawesi (ANTARA) - The Lore Lindu National Park Office is working with police and military personnel to contain forest and land fires that have burned about 100 hectares of conservation land in Central Sulawesi’s Sigi and Poso districts.
Lore Lindu National Park Office Chief Agus Arianto said close coordination among police, military personnel, and regional authorities was essential to ensure a rapid response, particularly in conservation areas.
“When a hotspot appears, a joint team can move immediately to extinguish the fire and prevent it from spreading and causing further damage to forest ecosystems,” he said in Dolo, south of Palu, on Wednesday.
Fire-prone areas include Lindu and Kulawi in Sigi District, as well as parts of Poso District, he added.
“Forest and land fires have affected about 100 hectares inside Lore Lindu National Park,” Arianto said.
He emphasized that prevention remained a priority alongside coordinated firefighting efforts.
“We are continuously educating communities about the dangers of using fire to clear land, especially during extreme weather associated with El Niño, which makes these areas highly vulnerable to fires,” he said.
The park office will also participate in the Central Sulawesi Police’s 65-day Aman Tinombala regional operation, running from October 28 to December 31, 2026.
The operation aims to address natural disasters, including forest and land fires.
