Indonesia's modest fashion industry eyes global markets, Minister says

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Creative Economy Minister Teuku Riefky Harsya said Indonesia’s modest fashion industry had significant potential to expand into global markets, including in Europe and countries that are not Muslim-majority.

“This potential is actually not only for Muslim countries, but also for European countries, countries that are not Muslim-majority,” Harsya said at the opening of IN2Motion Fest x JMFW 2026 on Wednesday.

Harsya said Indonesian modest fashion stood out for its cultural heritage and regional designs, each with distinctive characteristics that set them apart from products from other countries.

Realizing this potential requires collaboration among various stakeholders to strengthen the domestic modest fashion ecosystem and connect Indonesian creative works with global industries and markets.

“This is an extraordinary opportunity and needs collaboration from all parties,” he said.

He added that the event also provided an opportunity for the ministry to strengthen the creative industry, particularly the fashion subsector, by expanding market access, developing business networks, and promoting the responsible use of digital technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI).

The government will also issue an AI roadmap that includes ethical guidelines for using the technology, he said.

Responsible AI use is essential to ensuring that creators’ works remain protected, Harsya said, emphasizing that intellectual property protection and commercialization are key to increasing the added value of Indonesian creative products.

“Designs, motifs, and brands are not merely product identities but also economic assets that need to be protected and developed so they give optimal benefits to creators and business players,” he said.

Harsya expressed hope that IN2Motion Fest, in collaboration with JMFW 2026, would serve as a bridge connecting creative works, industry, and global markets. He also expressed appreciation to Bank Indonesia, ministries and agencies, the Indonesia Fashion Chamber (IFC), and other strategic partners for supporting the event.
