Wynberg Boys High, UWC rugby star dies in his sleep

A Wynberg Boys High past pupil, Michail Kasfikis, who earned his schoolboy rugby colours and later played for the University of Western Cape varsity squad, has died in his sleep.

The 2023 matriculant was remembered in a glowing tribute posted on Facebook by his alma mater.

In a Facebook post on Wednesday, 2 September, both the Wenberg Boys High School and the Wynberg Old Boys Union fondly remembered Michail Kasfikas, who recently died.

The tribute read: “It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Michail Kasfikis, who passed peacefully in his sleep.

“Michail was a young man of quiet determination, integrity and sincerity. He approached life with purpose and a willingness to learn, always open to guidance and committed to doing things properly. His strong work ethic, gentle nature and kindness made him a valued member of the Wynberg community. He will be remembered fondly by all who had the privilege of knowing him.”

No other details have been shared on the cause of his death

Michail Kasfikas also played rugby for the University of the Western Cape, where he was studying towards a Bachelor of Arts in sports science.

Zachary Porthen is the latest player from the school he graduated from in 2022, while Stormers star Yaqeen Ahmed matriculated in 2025.
