Mount Anak Krakatau's eruption returns to Strombolian phase: govt

Kota Bandung (ANTARA) - Indonesia's Geological Agency said Mount Anak Krakatau's eruption in the Sunda Strait has returned to a Strombolian phase, marked by shorter eruptions and lower amplitudes.

Speaking in Bandung, West Java, on Tuesday, Geological Agency Head Lana Saria said the volcano's current activity has returned to its typical Strombolian pattern.

Based on seismic monitoring, Saria said tremor activity at the volcano's observation post has steadily declined since September 5.

As of September 8, the volcano had produced eight small eruptions lasting 10 to 15 seconds, with ash and other material concentrated around the slopes and crater.

Saria said the current activity differs from the December 2018 eruption, when a partial collapse of the volcano into the sea triggered a tsunami.

Deformation data currently show no movement of the crater wall that could trigger a collapse into the water, Saria said.

She said improved atmospheric conditions following a reduction in the ash plume had also helped commercial aviation operations.

Several airports previously affected by volcanic ash have resumed operations after meeting flight safety requirements.

Fishing activity along the Sunda Strait coast has also returned to normal, Saria said, although fishermen are advised to wear eye protection and masks during light ashfall.

Despite the decline in volcanic activity, the Geological Agency has maintained Mount Anak Krakatau's status at Level III, or Alert.

The volcano remains under a three-kilometer safety radius, with authorities maintaining the Level III status despite activity easing since September 5, Saria said.
