Shakira Kicks Off Madrid Residency With 165,000-Fan Opening Weekend, Laura Pausini, and Setlist Surprises

Shakira kicked off her massive Madrid residency this weekend, drawing approximately 165,000 fans across the first three of 12 scheduled shows and establishing early on that audiences shouldn’t necessarily expect the same concert every night.

The Colombian superstar opened the run Friday, September 18th, at the purpose-built Estadio Shakira at Iberdrola Music, where approximately 55,000 fans attended the first night. The venue will serve as Shakira’s European home for the next several weeks, with the Madrid residency marking the continent’s only stop on her “Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran World Tour.”

For opening night, one of the biggest surprises came not from a special guest but from Shakira’s own catalog. She brought “Te Dejo Madrid” back into the set, appropriately reviving the 2005 Fijación Oral, Vol. 1 track for the city that inspired its title. She also reflected on first arriving in Madrid at 19 and recalled an early romance with a Madrileño as Spanish outlet Telecinco reports.

By Saturday, Shakira was already tinkering with the show. The second night introduced “Si Te Vas,” from 1998’s ¿Dónde Están los Ladrones?, as well as “Última,” from 2024’s Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran, suggesting that the residency will feature a rotating selection of songs rather than an identical setlist across all 12 nights.

The biggest surprise arrived Sunday, when Italian singer Laura Pausini appeared unannounced to sing “Antología,” the fan favorite from Shakira’s 1995 breakthrough album Pies Descalzos. The appearance marked the first time the two singers had performed together, adding another layer of nostalgia to a weekend already heavy on deep-catalog moments.

The ambitious production experienced some growing pains during its opening weekend, however. Attendees complained on social media and to Spanish media about long and poorly marked lines entering Macondo Park, lengthy waits for food and drinks, limited mobile service, and congestion leaving the venue.

More seriously, some fans in the upper stands reported feeling the temporary structure move during Friday’s concert, with several attendees saying the sensation caused anxiety. Live Nation responded by saying that all structures, including the stands, had been officially inspected and certified for safety and stability.

Those logistical challenges underscore the massive scale of the undertaking. The concerts are accompanied by Macondo Park, a sprawling Latin culture-focused space featuring food, fashion, literature, music, and other programming that opens hours before each performance.

That sense of celebration is baked into the residency’s conception: Shakira has said the Madrid run was born partly from seeing Latino communities living with persecution and fear, and wanting to respond by staging a massive celebration of Latin culture.
