Mahama, Carney explore expanded cooperation in energy, minerals and trade

Translate

President John Dramani Mahama and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney have discussed ways to deepen diplomatic and economic ties between Ghana and Canada, with particular attention to energy, critical minerals, trade and development.

The two leaders held bilateral talks in Antigua and Barbuda on the sidelines of the 28th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) 2026.

President Mahama used the engagement to advocate closer collaboration between countries that support multilateralism and a rules-based international order, arguing for stronger partnerships in addressing shared global interests.

The discussions also explored opportunities to expand cooperation across sectors of mutual interest and strengthen the two countries' relationship.

Prime Minister Carney, on his part, indicated Canada's willingness to broaden its partnership with Ghana, identifying energy, critical minerals, trade and development as key areas for further engagement.

The meeting forms part of a series of bilateral discussions President Mahama is holding with Commonwealth leaders attending the summit, as Ghana seeks to strengthen its diplomatic and economic partnerships.
