Indonesia targets electricity access for all villages by 2030

Karawang, W. Java (ANTARA) - The Indonesian government aims to ensure that all villages across the country have access to electricity by 2029–2030, following a directive from President Prabowo Subianto.
Coordinating Minister for Downstreaming and Energy Transition/Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia announced that the administration will accelerate power infrastructure deployment to reach millions of unserved households across roughly 11,000 villages.
"President Prabowo has mandated that we must ensure every village in Indonesia is electrified by 2029–2030," Bahlil said during a working visit to Karawang, West Java, on Thursday (Oct 15).
According to Bahlil, the target will be pursued gradually through two complementary government program: the Village Electrification (Lisdes) program and the New Electricity Connection Assistance (BPBL) program.
The Lisdes program is designed to build infrastructure in rural areas that are not yet connected to the national power grid, while the BPBL program focuses on providing direct grid connections for individual low-income households.
The expansion plan calls for a steep acceleration in activity. The government plans to expand its target from approximately 1,400 villages in 2025 to more than 4,000 villages in 2026.
Bahlil called on local governments and the state-owned electricity company PT PLN to identify villages, hamlets, and households requiring assistance.
While lack of power is traditionally associated with Indonesia's frontier, outermost and underdeveloped (3T) regions, the minister revealed that energy poverty remains an issue even on the country's most developed island of Java.
"God willing, we will gradually take an aggressive approach to achieving these targets," Bahlil said.
Acknowledging that geographic barriers and economic factors pose significant challenges to distribution, he reaffirmed the government's commitment to equitable energy access, describing it as a matter of social justice for all Indonesians.
