Iran: US strikes ship after Hormuz blockade breach

Translate

The United States struck a commercial ship attempting to breach its naval blockade on Iran, the US military said Sunday.

According to the US Central Command (CENTCOM), the cargo vessel "tried to depart regional waters after visiting an Iranian port," before its stern was struck by "precision munitions" shot from a US military aircraft.

In a video posted by CENTCOM, an explosion can be seen on the M/V Huda's stern as a result of the shooting, with the ship's civilian crew ignoring "repeated warnings."

The authorities in the UAE said 22 people had been rescued due to a fire on a vessel in the Gulf of Oman.

What's the situation in the Strait of Hormuz?

The US naval blockade on Iran, intended to pressure the country into lifting its own blockade on the Strait of Hormuz, has been in force for months.

Iran's own blockade of the waterway, through which a fifth of the world's oil and gas supplies flowed before the war started in late February, saw energy prices spike around the world.

Iran's Revolutionary Guards said three "non-compliant" oil tankers caught fire while going through the Strait. Tehran has regularly attacked vessels going through the Strait of Hormuz without its approval.

Aramco building hit after rocket attack

Elsewhere in the Middle East, the escalation between Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen and Saudi Arabia continued to rage.

Saudi Arabia said it had intercepted incoming missiles shot in the direction of the capital, Riyadh, on Sunday.

Debris from the interception damaged a building belonging to state-owned oil company Aramco. No casualties were reported, but some of the building's floors were heavily damaged, witnesses told AP.

Saudi Arabia accused Yemen-based militant group Houthisof launching two ballistic missiles and two cruise missiles.

While Houthis carried out such attacks in the past, the rebels have not claimed responsibility for the attack yet.

According to the Houthis, 33 people were killed in Saudi-led attacks on Yemen's rebel-held capital, Sanaa, on Saturday.
