India men’s hockey team was the overwhelming favourite against Indonesia and that is exactly how the contest panned out as the Asian Games defending champion claimed a 13-1 win on Sunday.
Dilpreet Singh starred with four goals while Shilanand Lakra and Sukhjeet Singh securing a brace. Harmanpreet Singh, Rajinder Singh, Mandeep Singh, Jugraj Singh, and Abhishek scored one goal each.
Finding the goal from open play had been a problem for India during its lacklustre World Cup last month. Against Indonesia, 10 of the 13 strikes were field goals.
Indonesia held its ground defensively in the first quarter. Shilanand’s opener and Abhishek’s goal came off favourable rebounds in the circle.
But the Harmanpreet-led side turned it up in the second quarter, scoring four goals in three minutes before the skipper scored a dragflick two minutes before the hooter.
The silver lining for Indonesia came in the third quarter. Sumit mistrapped an aerial ball and conceded a short corner in the 33rd minute, which Aulia Al Ardh converted.
This was the first time Indonesia breached the Indian goal in three meetings, scoring after letting in a combined 40 goals.
Craig Fulton’s side plays Sri Lanka next on Tuesday.
