‘Greatest flyover ever’: Did Trump eat his words? [video]

President Donald Trump’s comments about a US stadium flypast being the “greatest ever” has resurfaced after Airlink’s impressive double flyover at the DHL Stadium in Cape Town last weekend.

The air stunt, which took place ahead of the Springboks and All Blacks’ second test match, has made international headlines, after its particularly low-flying statistics. The airline has since set the record straight, stating that the flights complied with the guidelines of the South African Civil Aviation Authority and included a crew of highly experienced pilots.

In a TikTok reshared by a South African, President Donald Trump is seen praising the pilots of his Air Force One Boeing, which flew over the Northwest Stadium in Maryland last November.

The flyover, in which Trump was on board, took place ahead of an NFL game between the Washington Commanders and the Detroit Lions.

The flight, conducted by a Boeing 747 VC-25, flew around 600 metres above the ground, a far cry from Airlink’s two aircraft flying in formation, around 15 metres above the roof of the DHL Stadium in Cape Town.

Trump’s official aircraft landed at a military base a distance away. Upon his exit, he told the media, “Was that the greatest flyover ever? Nobody’s ever done a flyover like that.”

He then praised the Air Force One pilots as “the best pilots in the world.”

Meanwhile, the South African Rugby Union (SARU) has confirmed that Airlink – the official sponsor of the Greatest Rivalry series between the Springboks and the All Blacks – will perform another double flyover at the FNB Stadium this weekend.

The 95 000-seater venue is the largest stadium on the African continent and will host the third test match in the series.

The fourth and final test match will surprisingly take place in the US on 12 September at the M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, Maryland. It will mark the first-ever test between South Africa and New Zealand on US soil.
