Jakarta Governor urges residents to follow "5M" against volcanic ash

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung urged residents affected by volcanic ash from Mount Anak Krakatau to follow five protective measures or "5M", including wearing masks, limiting outdoor activities and seeking medical care.

Anung said residents should implement the five measures if volcanic ash begins affecting their areas, according to an official statement issued here Sunday.

The first three measures are wearing masks or other protective equipment outdoors, closing doors, windows and water sources, and limiting outdoor activities during heavy ashfall.

Residents should wet volcanic ash deposits before cleaning them to prevent particles from becoming airborne again, Anung said.

People experiencing respiratory problems or worsening vision should immediately seek treatment at the nearest health facility, he said.

The Jakarta provincial government continues coordinating with the central government, the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the Geological Agency and the Jakarta Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD).

The coordination aims to monitor Anak Krakatau’s activity and the movement of volcanic ash, Anung said.

Anung said Anak Krakatau remains at Level III, or Alert, while volcanic ash has spread to several parts of Indonesia, including Jakarta.

He said wind conditions determine the direction of volcanic ash movement.

The government is continuing to monitor ash movement and Anak Krakatau’s activity to determine appropriate response measures, Anung said.

Anung urged residents to protect themselves, avoid panic and carefully assess information about the Anak Krakatau eruption.

He also reminded residents to seek immediate medical attention if volcanic ash exposure causes respiratory problems or worsening vision.

Anung urged residents to remain vigilant, protect themselves and their families, and help protect Jakarta by taking precautions against volcanic ash.
