An eatery worker, identified simply as Jeffrey, has been shot dead by suspected cultists at Oghara in the Otefe area of Delta State.

A police source told PUNCH Metro on Monday that the incident occurred on Saturday evening.

It was gathered that Jeffrey and his colleague, Daniel, were returning home from work when the assailants attacked them.

While Jeffrey died from the gunshot injuries he sustained, Daniel survived the attack and was subsequently hospitalised.

“We received a report that a young man named Jeffrey was killed while heading home from work alongside his friend in Oghara. His friend was also injured in the process.

“Efforts were made to save Jeffrey, but he did not survive the gunshot injury. His corpse has been deposited in the morgue,” the police source said.

An anti-cultism advocacy platform, Naija Confra, in a post seen by PUNCH Metro on Monday, stated that the two men were attacked while riding on a motorcycle from work.

The platform also stated that Jeffrey was a graduate of Delta State Polytechnic.

It said, “On Saturday, September 12, 2026, around 10-11pm, two people who worked together at an eatery in Otefe were attacked in Oghara, Otefe, Delta State, while they were on a motorcycle returning from work.

“One of the victims was Jeffrey, and the second victim was Daniel, who graduated from Delta State Polytechnic this year and survived the attack.”

The platform further stated that Daniel was taken to a hospital outside the immediate area because some hospitals around the scene were reportedly on strike.

It added that Jeffrey and Daniel lived in apartments that were reportedly close to each other.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, could not be reached for comment, as calls to his telephone line were unanswered.

A text message sent to him had also yet to be replied to as of the time of filing this report.
